Vertical Development

Developmental theorists mapped the distinct stages through which we can grow, even after we might be considered to be ‘grown-up’. Whereas children move rapidly through the stages, an adult’s pace of development slows dramatically, almost to the point of stagnation.  These stages are like the ever expanding rings of a tree. Each new ring offers us the chance to grow into a larger and more complex version of ourselves. Evolving through these stages of mental development is what is called vertical development.

Why now?

We live in unprecedented times, our environment is becoming more unpredictable every day. The increasing amount of complexity seems to have outpaced our ability to make sense of it and manage it successfully.

How can this help you?

By deliberately engaging in your development, your ability to handle complexity grows. You create a greater capacity to think and act in more strategic, systemic and independent ways.

About the koru

The koru is a symbol used in Maori art, based on the new unfurling frond of the silver fern, native to New Zealand. It symbolises new life, growth, strength and peace. The circular shape of the koru helps to convey the idea of perpetual movement while the inner coil suggests a return to the point of origin.
